picture of gingerbread house

December 25, 2006

This is a gingerbread house I built in 2006.

I made the gingerbread from scratch. The dough turned out to be extremely sticky, probably from using too much molassas. It was not quite as bad as my home made marshmallows, but almost. Once it baked I cut it while warm and then I let it dry out and harden for a day.

I made royal icing to glue everything together. The windows in the clock tower were made from poured sugar syrup so they were transparant. I cooked the sugar just a little too long so it started to carmalize, resulting in a slightly amber colored "stain glass" effect.

The rest, as is traditional, is mostly prepackaged candy pieces.
